BIRDS OF BHINDAWAS LAKE BIRD SANCTUARY AREA (including KHAPARHWAS LAKE and villages within 10 km sq radius)
Please see Site Guide for details of this prime site and how to get there. Note that the numbers of birds varies greatly with the availability of surface water. This list was initiated in June 2001 by Suresh C. Sharma and Bill Harvey.
Frequency Codes;
Note that we are using common, scarce etc in their various permutations to indicate (perhaps rather lazily!) commonly seen etc. They are NOT necessarily abundance terms but relate to the likelihood of reasonably expectable sightings
Very Common : a bird is considered to be very common when it is recorded on all visits of at least two hours duration, i.e., 100% surety of being recorded.
Common : a bird is considered to be common when it is recorded on half of the visits at the right time of the year, of at least two hours duration, i.e., 50% surety of being recorded.
Scarce: a bird is considered to be common when it is recorded on one-fourth of the visits, at the right time of the year, of at least two hours duration, i.e., 25% surety of being recorded.
Rare: a bird is considered to be rare when it is not likely to be recorded or may be recorded on less than one tenth of the visits, at the right time of the year, of two hours duration, i.e., 10% surety.
Vagrant: an unexpected visitor at any season. On average less than one record every 5 years
Status Codes
Resident : at least some individuals may be seen in any month and the species probably breeds in Bhindawas or nearby areas. Some resident birds may move out of the sanctuary for feeding, breeding or roosting.
Winter visitor: when the bird is seen during winter months, usually October to April with peak season from December to February. Usually also a passage migrant through to and from other parts of India.
Summer visitor: when the bird is seen during summer and monsoon months, usually from May to September. May breed.
Passage migrant : when the bird is seen mainly during August-November and/or March-May.
