A CHECKLIST OF THE BIRDS OF
The CORBETT TIGER RESERVE
Compiled by
Manoj Sharma, Bill Harvey, Nikhil Devasar and Bikram Grewal
Updated May 2004

The Park

Set up in 1936, as the first national park of India, Corbett National Park was initially named Hailey National Park. It was due to the sustained efforts of Malcolm Hailey, Governor of United Provinces, that this area was given the status of a national park, with an area was 323.75 sq. km. In 1954-55, its name was changed to Ramganga National Park. When Hailey had to demarcate the boundaries of the park, he had taken Jim Corbett’s help, who knew the area very well and happened to be a close friend of Hailey. Jim Corbett, who had killed twelve man-eating tigers and leopards in the hill districts of Kumaon and Garhwal was well known to the local people of the area. He migrated to Kenya at the time of Indian independence where died in 1955 and in his memory, the park was renamed the Corbett National Park. In 1966 the area of the Park was increased to 520.82 sq. km. In 1972, the Wildlife Protection Act came into force and all hunting was banned. In 1974 Project Tiger was launched from Corbett, aiming at protecting the tiger by protecting its habitat. Corbett became the first Tiger Reserve in India. In late eighties the area of the Tiger Reserve was further increased to include Corbett National Park, Sonanadi Sanctuary and surrounding reserve forest. It became known as the Corbett Tiger Reserve from this point.

Corbett Tiger Reserve is a birder’s heaven. Out of the approximate 1300 species of birds found in the Indian subcontinent more than 40% have been recorded in Corbett Tiger Reserve. Situated in the foothills of Himalayas in the Siwalik ranges, between 400 and 1200 m above sea level, in the newly formed state of Uttaranchal, Corbett Tiger Reserve attracts altitudinal migrant birds in winter. Long distance migrants from central and northern Asia also spend their winters here. Many passage migrant species use Corbett’s protected habitat en route to and from their wintering and summering quarters in peninsular India and Sri Lanka. In the summer, Corbett also attracts bird species from the Gangetic plains and peninsular India, which come to breed.

The flora of Corbett Tiger Reserve consists mainly of Shorea robusta (Sal) forest dotted with patches of mixed forest and grass-lands. Mixed forests of Corbett supports more than 100 species of trees including Adina cordifolia (Haldu), Aegle marmelos (Bel), Albizia procera (Safed Siras), Casearia elliptica (Dhak), Diospyros exsculpta (Tendu), Ficus bengalensis (Bargad), Mallotus phillipensis (Rohini), Schliechera oleosa (Kusum), Terminalia bellerica (Bahera) and Ziziphus glaberima (Ber). The river Ramganga, which is the lifeline of Corbett, supports the vast riverine forests of Dalbergia sisso (Shishum). More than 50 species of shrubs are found in Corbett including Abutilon indicum (Khanghi), Achyranthes aspera (Latjira), Cannabis sativa (Bhang), Dhatura metel (Dhatura), Glycosmis arborea (Ban nimbu) and Urtica parviflora (Bichu). The habitat also supports more than 100 species of terrestrial herbs, 15 species of aquatic herbs, more than 35 species of climbers and 20 species of ferns. The Chaurs, as the grasslands of Corbett are known locally, support more than 50 species of grasses.

This checklist of birds of Corbett is an update of that produced by Bikram Grewal and Bittu Sahgal in 1996 and that of Manoj Sharma produced in 2002. Older checklists, trip reports and sightings reported to various birding groups and publications have also been included if the sightings were considered valid. The checklist is based on the sightings in Corbett Tiger Reserve, the adjoining Tu marian Dam area adjoining the southern boundary of the reserve and Kosi river valley along the eastern boundary of the reserve from Kumeria to Ramnagar. Tax onomy, sequence and nomenclature follow An Annotated Checklist of the Birds of the Oriental Region by Tim Inskipp, Nigel Lindsey and William Duckworth (1996). Families have been given in bold letters and scientific names have been given in italics.

Mammals seen include the Tiger Panthera tigris, Leopard Panthera pardus, Elephant Elephas maximus, Chital Axis axis, Sambar Cervus unicolor, Hog Deer Axis porcinus, Barking Deer Muntiacus muntjak, Wild Boar Sus scrofa, Langur Presbytis entellus and Rhesus Monkey Macaca mulatta; reptiles include Indian Marsh Crocodile or Mugger Crocodilus palustris, Gharial Gavialis gangeticus, King Cobra Naja bungarus, Common Krait Bungarus caoruleus, Cobra Naja naja, Russell”s Viper Vipera ruselli and Python Python molorus and Monitor Lizard Varanus bengalensis.

Fish are represented by the Mahaseer Barbus tor, Kalimuchi Barbus chilinoides, Kalabasu Labeo calabasu, Chilwa Oxygastro bacaila and Goonch Bargarius bargarius. Useful Information: Daytime visitors are only permitted to travel in the Bijrani sector and day permits are issued at the Ramnagar office. Jeeps and guides can be hired at the Amdanda Gate, which is the entry point for day visits. Overnight visitors to Corbett require an entry permit as well as reserved accommodation in one of the forest rest houses or the tourist complex at Dhikala. Advance reservations are available from the Field Director, Corbett National Park, Ramnagar (Dist. Nainital) 244715, Uttaranchal.

When to visit:

The park is open from mid-November to mid-June. The months from March to June get very hot, but are considered the best time to view the animals as they come down more frequently to the water to drink. The dry undergrowth, at this time, helps in better visibility.

Where to stay:

Basic accommodation is available at Ramnagar town. Various resorts have been built along the Kosi River on the road from Ramnager. These range from being medium-priced to very expensive. The Forest Dept. has accommodation at several rest houses in the reserve such as those at Khinnauli, Bijrani, Gairal, Lohachaur, Halduparao and Sarapduli. There are also a variety of accommo-dations available at Dhikala, which is where most people stay. Visitors are advised that catering facilities are available only at Bijrani, Gairal and Dhikala.

Getting there:

By rail: The closest station is at Ramnager, 21 kms distant. Ranikhet Express, which leaves the Old Delhi Railway Station late at night, is convenient, as it reaches Ramnagar early next morning. By road: Access to the park is from Ramnagar. The Dhangari Gate closes at 4.30 p.m. It is also feasible to drive down from New Delhi. The 300-km drive takes six hours. Ramnagar is also well
connected by several buses.
