Annotated checklist of Kedarnath Musk Deer Sanctuary,Uttranchal. -
Compiled by Arun P.Singh (updated August ’2003)
singhap@icfre.org

This checklist takes into account the areas lying south eastern part of Kedarnath Musk Deer Sanctuary (Tunganath , Rudranath, ChoptaChatti , Duggal Bitta, Ansuya Devi, South Kharik, Kanchula Kharik, Gharsari, Mandal ,Cattle Camp ; all located between ca. 79o10’- 79o20’E and 30o27’- 30 o33’N along an altitudinal gradient from 1,600m to 3,600m, in the upper Garhwal Himalayas ,and situated about 300km from Delhi. The area has one of the best undisturbed forests of the type west Himalayan- wet -evergreen sub-tropical, temperate, sub-alpine and alpine, respectively. The forests here stretch over the mountain slopes in large continuous patches and are dense with closed canopy. Lichens on Oak trees, dwarf bamboos, and numerous fresh water streams and high rainfall are characteristic of the area besides enormous plant diversity (more than 650 plant species). Interestingly distribution of several bird species found there is known only from much further east (e.g. Great Parrotbill, Conostoma aemodium; breeding Black-faced Flycatcher-warbler, Abroscopus schisticeps; Collard Falconet, Microhierax caerulescens; Nepal Wren Babbler, Pnoepyga immaculata ; Yellow-bellied Bush Warbler, Cettia acanthizoides, etc).
